I’m currently reading a book by Jayne Williams called “Slow Fat Triathlete: live your athletic dreams in the body you have now”. There are several things I love about this book but the main thing has to be the byline: live your athletic dreams in the body you have now.
When I think of triathletes, I think of my friend R who played rugby and hockey at college. She has run marathons, completed numerous sprint level triathlons and, eventually, completed two ironman triathlons. In case you’re not up on triathlon distances, the ironman consists of swimming for 2.4 miles, then cycling for 112 miles, then running a marathon (26.2 miles). All one after the other. On the same day. (* see note at the end of this post)
R’s body is strong and lithe, she’s always been fit, and she trains like a women possessed.
My body is somewhat strong and fat, my fitness varies depending on how active I am, and I have definite hedonistic qualities. However, 7 years ago I took part in two short distance triathlons and I loved it.
Other than being 7 years older, there’s not much difference between my body now and my body then. So I’m thinking of giving triathlon another go – and my first step has been reading Jayne’s book.
What’s all this got to do with Sexy at Any Size?
Simple.
Jayne happily refers to herself as a ‘slow fat triathlete’ and, for her, the key word in that description is ‘triathlete’. The slow and the fat don’t matter. What matters is that she is doing it – she is a triathlete.
Live your dreams in the body you have now.

Because take it from me, those last 7 years have flown by and I bet the next 7 will too. So what are you waiting for?
